The boy with the thorn in his side

2018

The boy with a thorn in his side is part of Variations for a sculpture. This began by documenting shadows and shapes during walks and combining those into drawings for sculptures. Exploding these drawings into three-dimensional forms attempts to create a dialogue between sculpture, painting and drawing by bridging the floor and wall in this piece.

Organic material was added to break with my preoccupation with the built landscape: one of memory through florescent colors; fabricated silhouettes from a city that is more vertical than the one I grew up in. The palm evokes a figure dying within a fabricated stage. This contrasts ideals of coolness and modernity, while rejecting nature’s foregrounding of survival.
