He will not rise for anyone (Sketches for Mid-century modern Chairs)
2016
pencil on paper
My grandfather seemed to have had hundreds of plastic lawn chairs of various colors in the backyard. He exuded cool lounging under citrus trees. They maintained their use by staying in the configuration that he or the last user left them in. Sometimes they broke, but where still used. Yet, others where added to a pile of junk in the backyard for projects he thought he might use them in.
It is this memory that inspired these drawings for sculptures. Taking form cheap replicas of mid-century modern chairs and possible and impossible configurations they could take. I would create drawings for sculptures that would only perform the memory of function.
